The Paradise Inn is a National Historic Landmark. This project was part of a combined contract with the National Park Service to structurally repair and provide historical restoration for the 92-year-old Paradise Inn at Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State. The other portion of the contract was the construction of a new 18,000 s.f. Visitor Center. The Paradise Inn, originally built in 1916, is a large three-story, heavy timber frame structure. The Paradise Inn and Annex include 121 guest rooms and 16 staff rooms, a dining and kitchen wing, lobby, gift shop, snack bar and lounge. The main building is 41,870 s.f.
The $20.5 million rehabilitation of the Paradise Inn provided seismic stability as well as accessibility and life-safety code compliance. The massive rehabilitation included the construction of concrete shear walls, reinforcement and/or replacement of the stone rubber foundation, reconstruction of the stone chimneys, hazardous materials abatement, replacement of unrated partitions and doors with fire rated systems and replacement of selected mechanical and plumbing systems.
This project was awarded Engineering News Record (ENR) Magazine's "Best of the Best" in 2009.
